Lasso #2
Selecting the vertical posts is successful. To start the h orizontals, I pressed the Shift key, clicked the first corner, and then added the option(alt)key. At this point an "x" appeared by the lasso and when I clicked again, all the dancing ants on the vertical boards disappeared. What am I doing wrong? |

Re: Lasso #2
keep holding the shift key and add the option(alt) key, don't release the shift and option keys as you click the opposite horizontal corner on the other side. don't release the shift and option keys until you have the horizontal board outlined. Then repeat as necessary to outline the top board (or bottom board) depending on where you started. _________________ Yesterday is History Tomorrow is a Mystery So Live for Today One Day At A Time!!! |

Re: Lasso #2
Yeah, I'm having an issue, as well. Horizontals selected, then I press (and hold) the shift key, I get a lasso with a plus sign, good. I click and then add the Alt key (so now I have shift, alt and the mouse button pressed) and it doesn't constrain. If I am only able to draw freehand, what is the point of the Alt key being held down? |

Re: Lasso #2
The Alt key doesn't constrain to horizontal or vertical. What it does is to give you temporary access to the Polygonal Lasso tool, which means you can click the beginning and end points, and not have to trace all the way along the line. |

Perfect! Thank you. I'm getting it . . . slowly. |

Re: Lasso #2
I'm having problems also. To simplify the problem, I drew two horizontal blobs with the lasso tool next to each other. I then wanted to connect them to form an "H" so (like step 7 on page 7 of the CS4 edition) I pressed SHIFT (toolbar showed lasso tool moving to "Add to selection"), but after clicking a point within the left blob, pressing ALT doesn't move me to polygonal lasso tool, it moves the lasso tool to "Intersect with Selection" and shows me an 'x' next to the lasso tool. Perhaps this changed in CS4, the help file for the lasso tool says "To draw a straight-edged selection border when no other pixels are selected, press Alt " Hmmm. no other pixels selected... |

Re: Lasso #2
OK - you've selected your two 'horizontal blobs'. Pressing the Shift key now changes the lasso to 'add to selection', so that's fine. Start making a selection, and don't release the mouse button: instead, hold alt after you've started to draw (but keep Shift held down). You should now have the polygonal lasso tool. It's a tricky one, because the alt key behaves differently depending on the order you press it. Press before you start to draw, and it will subtract from the selection; press after, and it will give you the polygonal lasso. |

Re: Lasso #2
It does seem tricky. The trick is to start dragging your mouse after pressing SHIFT again, then press ALT and unclick the mouse, then start clicking on your polygon corners. I have had *no* luck switching to polygonal lasso mode unless I start dragging first and then unclick after holding down ALT. |
